Hand building in clay

There is something very personally gratifying about holding a piece of clay in your hands and squeezing it into a form of some kind. The clay is manipulated, pushed, pulled and coaxed into something meaningful. The experience of molding clay sculpture and pottery is one that is usually remembered  and treasured for life.

In hand building, students will be introduced to techniques of working with clay. These disciplines will be taught and applied to projects involving pinch, coil and slab techniques. Students will also learn about glazing and firing pieces. intermediate students will move on to more intricate projects. 

Wheel Throwing

Instructor: Erik Hertz , potter

The Art Center's Pottery Studio boasts 6 of the best professional wheels available. Our approach to wheel throwing focuses on proper technique. Understanding the way the spinning clay responds to the hands is critical to successful wheel throwing. Our wheel lessons break down the steps of throwing detailing and explaining them in simple terms.
Beginners should have hand building experience or complete the hand building class before attending the wheel throwing class. Students will learn basic wheel skills: centering, opening, pulling, shaping, trimming and finishing, as well as glazing. As a beginner you will be make basic cylinder, such as mugs, vases, and bowls. As students techniques improve intermediate skills will be introduced and applied to projects.
